Descartes Never Had a Group Chat

Descartes Never Had a Group Chat

Design Story - Overthink & Tired | Collection: Beautifully Unhinged

In 1637, Rene Descartes sat with the most fundamental question in philosophy, what can I know with certainty? And arrived at the one thing doubt itself couldn't touch: the fact of the doubting. Cogito, ergo sum. I think, therefore I am.

He was right. He was also, by modern standards, severely undertaxed.

The Concept Unpacked

The thinking person's fatigue is not a new phenomenon. Pascal wrote about the misery of people who couldn't sit quietly in a room alone. The Stoics built entire disciplines around managing the volume of the mind's activity. But none of them had to contend with notifications. With the group chat that never goes quiet. With the ambient, continuous, low-level processing load of a life conducted partly online, in public, at all times.

Intense mental activity genuinely consumes metabolic fuel. This is not a metaphor. Glucose. Oxygen. Real biological resources. The overthinker isn't melodramatic, they're depleted. The experience of running mental loops on a problem that doesn't resolve, of holding multiple anxious threads simultaneously, of narrating your own experience while you're still in it: this is metabolically expensive. You're tired because you've been working. The work just doesn't show.

There's something worth naming in the gap between Descartes' clean, singular thought and the specific texture of contemporary mental life. He thought, therefore he was. You overthink, and therefore you need a nap.

The Design Language

Philosophy meets anxiety culture in the most direct possible way. The Cartesian reference sits inside the vernacular of digital fatigue, the wry, knowing humor of someone who has read Descartes and also has too many tabs open. The typography carries the exhaustion. You can feel the weight in the lettering.

Who It's For

Every overthinker who has ever been told they think too much, understood exactly why that was correct, and kept doing it anyway. The ones whose brains are their greatest asset and also their most demanding tenant.

I think, therefore I am exhausted. Close some tabs.
